Babies cannot explain whether an outfit feels scratchy, tight or too warm. Caregivers can regularly check the garment's fit and condition. Fussiness alone does not prove that clothing is the cause, so look at the wider situation too.
Check openings and seams
Necklines, cuffs, waistbands and leg openings should not leave deep marks or restrict movement. Turn garments inside out to inspect seams and labels for rough edges.
Notice dampness and overheating
If clothing becomes wet from sweat, feeding or spills, change it when needed. Check your baby's temperature and environment rather than relying on clothing fabric alone to keep them comfortable.
Inspect fasteners and decorations
Check buttons, snaps, zips and decorative pieces before use. Do not use garments with loose parts, sharp edges or damaged fasteners.
Respond carefully to skin irritation
If irritation appears, remove the suspected trigger and check for detergent residue, dampness, friction or a damaged garment. Persistent, spreading or severe symptomsâor symptoms accompanied by other signs of illnessâshould be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.
A quick fit check
- Can the baby move comfortably?
- Are neck and limb openings comfortable?
- Are seams, tags and fasteners intact?
- Is the baby dressed appropriately for the environment?
