Words such as soft, breathable or premium are common in clothing descriptions, but the fibre composition label gives more specific information about what a garment contains. Fabric feel also depends on yarn, knit or weave, weight, finishing and construction.
What does 100% cotton mean?
It indicates the stated fibre composition is cotton, subject to applicable labelling rules. It does not by itself tell you the fabric weight, finish or how a garment will feel after repeated washing.
What is a cotton blend?
A blend combines cotton with one or more other fibres. Check the percentage breakdown on the product label and compare it with your preferences and the garment's intended use.
Look beyond the fibre name
Inspect seams, neck openings, labels, cuffs and closures. A well-described fabric is only one part of a comfortable garment.
Follow the care label
Washing temperature, drying method and ironing recommendations can differ between garments. Following the label can help reduce shrinkage, colour transfer and damage to prints or elastic.
Before buying
- Read the exact fibre composition.
- Check the product's fabric and construction photos.
- Review washing instructions.
- Do not assume every garment described as cotton is identical.
